How much time should you plan for a first trip to Madagascar?
Madagascar is the world's fourth-largest island — roughly one and a half times the size of France. That's the first thing to factor in when planning an itinerary: you don't "do" the island in a week, and internal travel (by road or by air) often takes longer than people expect.
Under 10 days on the ground, it's best to focus the trip on a single region — the highlands and the RN7 route south (Antsirabe, Ranomafana, Isalo), or a beach stay in the north-west (Nosy Be and its surroundings), for example. Trying to combine several distant regions in a short window mostly translates into time spent in transit.
With two to three weeks, it becomes realistic to combine two regions — a land route (parks, highlands) and a beach stretch — without transit dominating the trip. That's the most common length for a complete first visit.
Beyond three weeks, a broader itinerary spanning several regions (north, west, south) becomes an option, but it means accepting more domestic flights or long driving days.
There's no "ideal" length in the abstract — only a balance between the time you have, the regions you're aiming for, and the pace you want (relaxed, balanced, intense). That's exactly what the questionnaire lets us fine-tune with you.
